Fowler Welch - Coolchain specialises in providing high quality, cost efficient, fresh fruit, produce, chilled and ambient products distribution services to supermarkets and wholesale market customers throughout the United Kingdom. From its Spalding, Lincolnshire, consolidation centre, the company handles much of the division's important fresh produce and horticultural business, and a significant amount of chilled foodstuffs. The northern and eastern operation operates from the 20-acre site, complimented by secondary facilities at Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. Its southern operation is based at Teynham (Kent) with additional facilities at Sheerness and Bristol Docks and, on the South Coast, at Southampton Docks.
The company has important contracts to deliver fresh produce, chilled foods and flowers to the regional distribution centres
of many major supermarket chains including Safeway (now Wm Morrison), Somerfield and Tesco. Daily deliveries are also made
to around 40 wholesale markets nationwide. The introduction of double-decked trailers able to carry 40 pallets as opposed
to the 26 pallets carried by traditional vehicles has helped to increase efficiency and drive down costs.
At its 20 acres distribution centre in Spalding and 17 acres site at Teynham, separated coldstores allow optimum storage of a wide variety of fresh produce requiring different temperatures. The sites have been purpose designed to maintain the temperature-controlled chain from products' collection to final delivery.
Fowler Welch Ambient operates out of Stockport in Cheshire, with a satellite site at Birmingham and offers
a complete distribution service for ambient goods to a wide customer base with 280,000 sq ft of warehousing available on its
two sites.
The company's international subsidiary, Fowler Welch BV, is based in The Netherlands, with its UK business focused at the Spalding centre. From here, it operates a temperature-controlled road feeder network between Holland and London's airports as well as transporting produce for its sister company's supermarket and other customers.
